Taranaki lies to the west of New Zealand's North Island. Mount Taranaki is the area’s principle physical landmark and thus the place has been named after it. Taranaki, on the west coast of the North Island, engulfs the volcano. North Taranaki Bight and the South Taranaki Bight are the two huge bays situated to the north- west and south west of the Cape Egmont respectively.

Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont—Te Maunga O Taranaki—is the second tallest mountain in the North Island and also the primary geological aspect of that area. According to the Maori legend , Taranaki formerly stood with the Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu mountains in the central North Island. It occupies its present ocation due to a battle with Tongariro.
