Places to Visit in Scotland

Be sure to check out all these places to visit in Scotland Below

No matter what your holiday plans are, there are so many places to see in Scotland that you’ll probably end up changing them anyways! Recognized as one of the most naturally beautiful countries in the world, Scotland offers its visitors a wealth of choices and destinations. From historic castles to enchanting glens, there’s something here for everyone, from the Highlands and Islands to the Scottish Borders.

Central Scotland

Home to the beautiful yet uniquely different cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as historic Stirling, this is the ideal starting point when looking for places to visit in Scotland:

Edinburgh Castle

Probably the most famous castle in the UK, never mind Scotland, this is home to the aptly named One O’clock Gun, which is fired without fail every afternoon at the set time. Stirling Castle should also be visited, especially for fans of the film ‘Braveheart’, as this will tell you the true story behind William Wallace.

Arthur Seat (Edinburgh)

This is actually a dormant volcano in the center of Edinburgh, and if you take the time to climb to the top, you can see the Kingdom of Fife as well as the whole of Edinburgh.

Glasgow Piping Centre

Mention Scotland and you immediately think of the bagpipes. Here you’ll discover their history, and then after that you can eat a glorious dinner in the center's restaurant, which is actually part of a converted church.

Blair Drummond Safari Park (Stirling)

An open-air safari park in the heart of Scotland, this is one of the most popular places to see in Scotland for both young and old alike.

The Highlands and Islands

Home to some of the most magical places to visit in Scotland, and certainly where you’ll find the finest single malt Scotch, there is much to see here:

The Drambuie Trail, which lets you take the same steps that the famous Bonnie Prince Charlie took hundreds of years ago. Of course, the drink of the same name will keep you warm along the way…

Loch Lomond, a huge lake 24 miles long, and famous for being both the song of the same title that praises its “Bonnie Banks”, and the largest mass of freshwater in the UK.

Loch Ness. Arguably the most famous of all the places to see in Scotland, this loch just to the southwest of Inverness is the fabled home of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. And yes, she really does exist! Be sure to take your camera.

The Isle of Skye, which is one of the most remote yet beautiful pieces of land anywhere in the world. Home to Gaelic, the language of old Scotland, as well as the occasional Golden Eagle, this really is a must-see.

The Scottish Borders

Famous for its rugby teams where many of Scotland’s most famous players have come from, this friendly area includes:

Floors Castle in Kelso. This is one of the most historic places to visit in Scotland – not only is it the largest castle actually occupied in Scotland, it’s also where Prince Charles was alleged to have proposed to Lady Diana. The film ‘Tarzan – The Legend of Greystokes’ was filmed here as well.

Fatlips Castle, between the border towns of Hawick and Denholm, and reputedly one of the most haunted ruins in the land.

Abbotsford, a small town near Melrose, and birthplace of the famous Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. His ancestral home with its huge gardens is well worth a visit.

There are obviously many more places to visit in Scotland, but these ones will certainly give you a great starting point, as well as offer some less obvious destinations the next time you pay a visit to Scotland.
