Places to Visit in Moscow
Be sure to take a look at these places to visit in Moscow
Now that Russia is becoming more accessible to the rest of the world, Moscow has fast become a
most cosmopolitan city, and was voted the most expensive city in the world for the past two years.
But despite its rush into the modern era, remnants of Moscow's enduring traditions can still be seen
in all their glory. Here are both ancient and contemporary places to visit in Moscow.
The Red Square
The Red Square is the very soul of Moscow, and the Kremlin, the city within a city, is one of the
places you definitely can't miss on your trip to Moscow. All tourists who visit the city never fail
to pass up a chance to check out Lenin's tomb, where Lenin, also known as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov,
lies very well preserved for all to see.
St Basil's Cathedral
Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible, the cathedral's majesty is contributed to by the brightly colored,
swirling cupolas and domes seen from miles away.
The Banya
These are Russian public baths, which also figure highly in the cities as an important social meeting
place, aside from the local spa. Though the methods used may seem severe to non-Russians - intense heat
and cold washings with a little stick beating for good measure - but the process really does give you a
unique Russian experience.
Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
First named after Alexander III, the Pushkin Museum contains a rather large collection of Western art,
including works by Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse and Gauguin. It also holds "Priam's treasure," containing
gold and other artifacts found by Heinrich Schliemann on the site that used to be ancient Troy.
The Bolshoi Theatre
Home to the world's most sumptuous operas and ballets, you could watch Eugene Onegin on a romantic
weekend, or bring your kids to see Swan Lake, in the same city they were first created, in one of the
most beautiful and grand theatres in the world.
Conservatory
Music lovers will be excited to see a performance in any of the three halls in the conservatory, each
known for marvelous acoustics and world class performances.
The Moscow State Circus
If you're more after spectacular entertainment than art, then the Moscow State Circus is a must-see.
State-of-the-art technology, such as moving and interchangeable rings, help showcase the very best of
traditional Russian circus.
Izmailovo Market
Need to buy goodies for the folks back home? Take a trip, or several trips, to Izmailovo market to
get nifty Russian handicrafts and souvenirs.
Arbat
Old Arbat street is a cultural center in itself, where noblemen and influential artists lived and
mingled, filled with cafes and restaurants, shops, street artists and buskers.
For fine dining in Moscow, make sure to try Pushkin Cafe, Ulei, Belyo Solnste Pustyni, Biscuit and
Chocolat.
The Metro
Going around and getting to the different places to visit in Moscow, don't miss the breathtaking
architecture found in Moscow's Metro network, and all its connecting train stations, which are all
differently, yet equally intricately decorated. Scupltures in one station, ornate mosaics in another,
going to each station just for a look-see is going to be worth the trip.
