If you think it is easy to find places to visit in Italy, you are absolutely right. It is deciding where to go that presents a problem.

Italy has a magnificent history and so many places of interest; one holiday is not nearly enough to even scratch the surface. To get you started, I have put together a list of some very worthwhile places to visit in Italy.

VERONA

Arena di Verona

Imagine the roar of 22 000 spectators, smell the fear and blood. This well conserved amphitheatre was built in 1AD.

Museum di Castelvecchio

Impressive and stately, this 14th century castle has a fine art gallery as well.

Piazza delle Erbe

Once a Roman forum, this quaint square with its historic buildings and sculptures also has a market where you’ll find an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Not your run of a mill tourist attraction but well worth a visit. Unfortunately in a sad state of disrepair, you can nevertheless spend hours looking at all the very old and beautiful marble statues. Some tombs seem as big as castles. Mazzini’s tomb is a must see and so is the holocaust memorial.

ASSISI

Eremo della Carceri

St Francis of Assisi often stayed at this mountain retreat to pray and meditate.

Rocca Maggiore

Overlooking Assisi, this 12th century castle fortress reminds one of a grand old lady keeping watch.

Museum Civico

If art is one of your passions, be sure to pay a visit to this museum and art gallery. Contemporary and medieval works will enthrall you.

Piazza del Comune

In this lively square, you can experience the true Assisi.

Via San Francesco

Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the magnificent homes, shops and age old buildings.

POMPEII

Of all the places to visit in Italy, no trip would be complete without a visit to the ancient city of Pompeii.

Walking through the ancient ruins, one tries to imagine those last few minutes before Mount Vesuvius erupted. Even though it happened more than 1 700 years ago, it is as if those who lived here are still present.

VENICE

Venice and gondolas go hand in hand and a trip on a gondola is not to be missed. See Venice in its entire splendor while being serenaded. It is easy to see why Venice is considered the world’s most romantic city by many.

MILAN

Whether you are interested in art, fashion, architecture, history or opera, Milan has it all.

Special things of interest in Milan include...

Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’

Duomo – A striking gothic cathedral (One of the largest in the world),

La Scala – Opera House that need no introduction.

ROME

The Vatican

Seeing Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel is an experience that leaves you overwhelmed and aware of his absolute genius.

Gladiator Arena

Who can forget Russell Crowe in his delightful Gladiator outfit? You too can learn how to be a gladiator, authentically dressed and with genuine weapons! At this authentic gladiator school they will teach you the secrets of the Roman gladiator games and award you with a certificate!

There are so many places to visit in Italy, to cover everything I will have to write a book about each city and region. In the interim though, I hope you found this information helpful and wherever you decide to go in Italy, you have a fantastic time!
