Amazing Places To Visit In Iceland

Be sure to look at all the places to visit in Iceland below

Known to some as “the land of fire and ice”, Iceland’s landscapes range from glacial to volcanic. Places to visit in Iceland have areas of beautiful coastline and fjords, not to mention the splendid snow-capped mountains.

Thingvellir

This is the only place in the entire world (above sea level) where you can actually witness the tectonic plates move apart from each other! While you are standing on the American tectonic plate, you can see the European tectonic plate!

Gullfoss

Located in Western Iceland, this waterfall is called The Golden Waterfall and is definitely one of the best places to visit in Iceland. The waterfall plunges 32 feet down over rocky ledges into the deep!

Blue Lagoon

This is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Iceland! This man-made lagoon is a gorgeous blue color and averages about 104 degrees Farenheit. It is rumored the mineral-rich lagoon has healing properties, so take time to swim while you are here.

Reykjavik

If you love the nightlife, this capital city is for you. It is known for being a party town, especially on the weekends. People who visit this city also use it as the gateway to Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes. Reykjavik is a great place to base your visit into the countryside and then return to all the creature comforts.

The Highlands

you’ll need a guide to see the beautiful countryside in this most remote area of Iceland. If you desire to see what the world may have looked like before humankind, this is one of the best places to travel to in Iceland.

Glaciers of Iceland

Iceland’s glaciers range from small cirque glaciers to extensive glacier caps. Skeidararjokull, Morsarjokull and Skaftafellsjokull are three valley glaciers located on the southern fringes of Vatnajokull, which is Europe’s largest glacier ice cap.

Landmannalaugar

Located in the Southern Highlands of Iceland, this region’s name means “the hot springs of the people of (the) land”. One of the most popular places to see in Iceland, tourists must visit during the summer, as the road is closed in late September and doesn’t re-open until the beginning of June. Landmannalaugar boasts magnificent natural beauty. You’ll see mountains of every color: pink, brown, purple, black, green, white, and yellow! Enjoy a bath in the hot natural pool, which is actually a naturally heated stream that has been blocked with rocks and wood to form the pool. If you love horseback riding, an Icelandic horse is available for short or long rides into areas that would otherwise be off-limits to vehicles and be difficult to access on foot.

The Culture House

Located in the capital city of Reykjavik, this great museum is a wonderful introduction to Iceland. It boasts two world class exhibitions which are fully interactive. One exhibit features the most important collections of medieval manuscripts in the entire world, including several of the oldest copies of the Icelandic Sagas.

The other exhibit is quite impressive and features the Volcanic island of Surtsey. Not only can visitors see spectacular scenery throughout the country of Iceland, they can tour museums and enjoy great music in the night clubs. If you visit during the winter months, the trip will be more than worth it when you see the Northern Lights across the sky on a clear night.
