Just 90 minutes from Atlanta and easy drive from any other north Georgia stopping spot.
Consider tubing down the river on a hot summer day, or visit in October during Helen’s October Fest and there are always plenty of shops if all you feel like doing is wondering aimlessly through the streets.
Go fishing on the loaded Chattahoochee River for your favorite trout. Go for a hike along one the many hiking trails such as Raven Cliff trail that takes you to a breathtaking waterfall. Talk a walk along the cobblestone streets and find out why Helen is one of the places to visit in Georgia.
Athens, Georgia
The home of the University of Georgia and also known as the party capital of the state, Athens is one of the places to visit in Georgia. Located in northern Georgia and just an hour outside of Atlanta it is close enough for you to enjoy from Atlanta but far enough away to escape the feel of big city.
Thanks to the university Athens is considered a very progressive town due to the music that has been brought through the town, but it is also a town very rich in history. Though progressive, it is still a very southern town. It is recommended that you take a walk through the University of Georgia even if it isn’t football season and you aren’t a fan. It exemplifies what a southern university campus should be.
See the State Botanical Gardens while you are in Athens. Located just outside of town it is a very fun stop for all nature lovers. Visit the soul of the city, downtown Athens has a beautiful mix of people from student to homeless to business to visitor. It is a eclectic assortment of the human race. Visit the home of the famous the Taylor-Grady house. This is the house that most famous Athenians have lived in.
Another place to visit in Georgia is the “Valley Above the Clouds,” also known as Suches. Suches sits at an altitude of 300 feet making the highest elevated city of the state. The city of Suches is located about one mile from the Appalachian Trail. This makes Suches is a definite hikers town.
It is not uncommon in the spring and summer months to see the town filled with hikers leaking out of the hills to collect mail Suches is on the way to no where but has a few places that you really must see.. Come and take a walk on the 265 mile Swinging Bridge or sit and reflect on life at Preacher’s Rock.
