From tourist to serious traveler, being in France is a unique experience. Visiting places in Paris can keep you seriously busy, but I am going to mention a few of my other favorite places as well.
PARIS
Eiffel Tower
What is the first thing you think of when someone mentions Paris? Most probably the Eiffel Tower. If you haven't been to the Eiffel Tower, you haven't been to Paris.
Many Parisians originally hated this very famous landmark. Today it is a symbol of French pride.
The Louvre, Paris
You've most probably seen the Louvre and the Mona Lisa in movies and TV programs. Nothing, however, can prepare you for the feelings you experience being there in person. Be prepared to be amazed.
Notre Dame Cathedral
This 12th century cathedral is an absolute masterpiece. Built in the Gothic style is represents the symbolic heart of Paris.
Arc de Triomphe, Paris
Another world-famous landmark often seen in movies and on TV. Standing there, you can actually imagine the feelings returning French troops must have felt as they returned triumphantly from battle.
Pere-Lachaise Cemetery
Sometimes you have to get away from the obvious tourist sites. Spending time in the resting place of so many famous French authors writers etc. brings a sense of peacefulness.
Luxembourg Gardens
Before the French Revolution, you would have to be royalty to venture into these fabulous gardens. Fortunately for us, nowadays we can all spend some leisurely time here, unwinding and relaxing. One of the most beautiful places to visit in France.
Sainte-Chapelle
This must be the most beautiful church in the city. Although you have to pass through some serious security to gain entry, it is worth it.
Centre Pompidou, Paris
Ask a few Parisians what they think of this building and you'll most probably get various opinions. Some view it as an innovative architectural masterpiece. Others consider it a monstrosity. Whichever way you look at it, it is a very popular tourist attraction.
Hotel des Invalides, Paris
Built by Louis XIV in the late 17th century it sheltered wounded and older soldiers. Napoleon's tomb is also a more recent addition.
The Catacombs
Sometimes you imagine ghostly skeletal fingers touching you while wandering around these underground stone quarries.
Musee Jacquemart-Andre
Art lovers take note. This museum housed in a private mansion boasts a collection of masterpieces by Rembrandt, Botticelli etc.
BORDEAUX
Bordeaux Wine School
For those who want to know more about this delightful beverage. This wine school offers courses for beginners and intermediates. Intensive and fun, you'll be attuned to the nuances of fine wines after one of their 3-day courses.
Grand Theatre
This beautifully carved opera house offers performances of excellent quality. A masterpiece well worth visiting.
NORMANDY
Le Mont-Saint-Michel
Of many of the places to visit in France, this unique, out of the way Abbey is an absolute must see. Long after your visit, you will still remember the architecture and mystery.
World War II sites
Prepare yourself for an emotional experience when you visit these sites and the beaches where the D-Day invasions took place.
Bayeux is a good place to use as a base when touring Normandy. It is home to the "Bayeux" tapestry. Over 200 feet long, it commemorates the victory in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings.
