The Dominican Republic has something for everyone. Taino Indian Sites are truly amazing and there are many caves which hold great importance to the Taino Indians as their story of creation is centered on a cave. Many of these caves have paintings and stone carvings depicting animals, plants and spirits as well as the Indians who interacted with them. These sites are dotted around in all directions. Many Taino artefacts can found at the museums.
The Museo de las Casas Reales houses many Taino Indian artifacts as well as hand-blown wine bottles and furnishings of bygone eras. President Trujillo who was in power from 1930 till 1961 acquired a collection of antique weaponry in 1955 and that is now on display as well. Being one of the world’s major sources of amber, the Museo Mundo de Amber houses are large collection of both local and international pieces. There are some amazing samples that contain leaves and other plants as well as bugs and other insects with a whole room housing samples of ants imbedded in the amber. Museo Alcazar de Colon or in English, Museum Citadel of Columbus was once the home of the son of Columbus, Diego and his wife Dona Maria de Toledo. The building has been completely restored and holds many objects that once belonged to the Columbus family. When visiting the capital Santo Domingo you will want to head for Zona Colonial. This is a very old part and houses many original building and is stepped in history. This is what many refer to as the ground Zero of the Spanish conquest of the Americas and was also the place of arrival of many settlers and also the conquistadores.
Construction on the Catedral Primada de America was started in 1514 and was not completed until 1546 and is one of the most important monuments in the city. With its late Gothic architecture combined with Romanesque features it is certainly a sight to behold. Up until 1992 one of the many chapels held the remains of Christopher Columbus.
The National Aquarium has an open air design and boasts great views of the Caribbean. With over 3,000 specimens of the 250 species of marine life, combined with the friendly, dedicated staff you are guaranteed an informative visit where you will learn about the marine life flora and fauna of the area and the protection of the unique habitats of the area. There are guided tours and lectures every day.
