Places To Visit In Beijing
Take a look at all the places to visit in Beijing below
Being its capital and political and cultural center for 800 years, Beijing is one of
the best cities to visit in China, and one of the best in all of Asia. These are only some
of the most exciting spots to see and places to visit in Beijing.
1. The Forbidden City - You must have seen this in the epic The Last Emperor,
as well as in other period films on Chinese history, and marveled at how beautiful it
was on film. Get to see the real thing, which promises to be a hundred times more
breathtaking. From the vast courtyard to glimpses of the 9,999 rooms in the Imperial Palace,
the Forbidden City is a great learning peg on Imperial China's traditions, architecture
and lifestyles. It is recommended that you allot half an afternoon to visit.
2. The Summer Palace - An extension of sorts of the Forbidden City, this park
was once the vacation house of the old emperors, filled with interesting towers, temples,
bridges and pagodas. Its highlight is an expansive lake surrounded by a walkway. You can
go boating on the lake in the summer, and walk on the ice lake in the winter.
3. Tiananmen Square - Another important aspect of Chinese history created by
Chairman Mao, Tiananmen Square is the biggest square in all the world and considered the
very center of Beijing. This is true even at short distances as it is surrounded by other
popular places to visit in Beijing, such as Gate of Heavenly Peace, the Great Hall of the
People, the Museum of Chinese History, the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, the Monument
to the People's Heroes, and the Mausoleum of Chairman Mao. You can actually line up to view
Mao's tomb, although there are no cameras allowed inside. You can also pay to climb up to
the balcony, where China's leaders used to make their speeches.
4. The Temple of Heaven - The main attraction of the Temple of Heaven is a tower
completely made of wood, without using any nails. In the park of the temple, there are
around one thousand kinds of trees planted, and still large open spaces to accommodate
locals who come to sing, meditate, practice martial arts and calligraphy, or play chess,
especially early in the morning.
5. The Beijing Zoo - This is where you'll find every size of panda imaginable.
Of course, there are lots of other animals in the zoo, but the pandas are the centerpiece
of the place and there are even special rates for live panda petting.
6. The Underground City - Once a maze of bombproof tunnels built during the cold war,
this cool Underground City now sports hotels and restaurants for tourists, who can only get in
through specific establishments above ground and with a special map of the city.
7. Although not a part of Beijing, the Great Wall of China can be accessed from
Beijing by bus, taxi or an arranged tour by your hotel. Only a three-hour drive away, the
trip is well worth it when you reach one of the few man-made structures that can be seen
from outer space. The Great Wall is quite majestic even up close and definitely one of the
places you must visit when you come to Beijing.
