Discover The Places To Visit In Amsterdam!

Are there cool places to visit in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is undoubtedly a gateway to Europe. However, travelers will find it difficult to just pass through, with many gorgeous places to visit in Amsterdam, from churches to windmills to museums to the oldest zoo in Europe.

Museums

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam on Museumplein has the biggest collection of art works from the Dutch Golden Age. The Rijksmuseum Research Library is the largest public art history library in Netherlands.

By the way, look what I found out...

The Stedelijk Museum or the City or Urban Museum, is a museum for modern art, also found on Museumplein. The top floor of this former post office is a restaurant that transforms into a dance club in the evenings.

The Van Gogh Museum is a museum dedicated to Vincent Van Gogh, with the paintings in the main exhibit arranged to chronicle the painter's somewhat turbulent and extraordinary life.

The Rembrandt House Museum was once the famous painter's residence. It features the most extensive collection of Rembrandt's etchings and drawings, including his only drawn self-portrait.

Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht is the preserved living quarters where Anne's family hid during the war, open for visitors to walk through. It also exhibits Anne Frank's life and legacies.

NEMO is a science and technology center, the largest in Netherlands. Visitors are allowed to touch and explore all that's on display.

Squares

Dam Square, also called the Dam, is where Amsterdam gets its name, being the Dam of the Amstel River. Here, you can find the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, which are also recommended places to visit in Amsterdam. The Dam is especially festive on certain holidays, with fairs and open air markets.

Waterlooplein or Waterloo Square is famous for its flea market of 300 stalls. The diverse merchandise includes clothes and accessories from all over the world, and rare books.

Most of the squares in Amsterdam are the locations of museums, churches and popular restaurants.

Churches

The Oude Kerk's floors are made of gravestones, as the church was originally built on a cemetary. It has three pipe organs, the second of which is deemed as the best organ in Europe.

The Nieuwe Kerk is not used as a church anymore but as an exhibition and recital space. It is the venue for royal coronations and weddings.

Windmills

Some windmills are open for public viewing and should be one of the places to visit in Amsterdam. Molen De Bloem is a smockmill that produces flour and spice, open for public visits when the mill is running.

Molen Van Sloten, which is used for drainage and houses the Kuiperijmuseum, arranges fixed tours.

Gardens and Parks

The Artis Zoo features animals from all over the world, an Aquarium, an African Savannah and a Planetarium.

Over-Amstel has both a cafe and a picnic area, as well as footpaths and bicycle paths. It's a great place for walking your dog, sunbathing and flying kites.

De Hortus is a botanical garden that offers guided tours in four different languages.

Amsterdam's Inner City

If you want to see more classic Dutch architecture, the Singelgracht is definitely one of the not-to-miss places to visit in Amsterdam. These streets are lined with almost 7000 National Heritage architectural monuments, mostly comprised of private homes and mansions.

No, you aren't allowed into these houses as they are inhabited by actual residents, but you can bike past and admire them from the street.
