Are There Some Cool Places To Visit At Donner Lake?

Discover Below Some Of The Interesting Places to Visit At Donner Lake

Donner Lake is a freshwater lake in Truckee, California, and it is the site of the Donner Party story. Despite its spot in one of America’s more gruesome moments in history, Donner Lake has become something of a family resort. As a result, there are many wonderful places to visit at Donner Lake.

• Donner Memorial State Park and Museum – The Emigrant Trail Museum features information and artifacts on early Pioneer life, the Donner party, the Transcontinental Railroad, and the Native Americans of the area. The park features fishing, hiking, boating, picnicking and skiing.

• West End Beach – The list of places to visit at Donner Lake must include the beach on the western end of the lake. West End Beach offers six group picnic sites with BBQs, as well as family picnic areas, a basketball court, a tennis court, and both sand and grass volleyball courts.

There are also playgrounds, horseshoe pits, and a swimming area. Visitors can also rent kayaks and paddleboats or bring their own boat.

• Truckee Tahoe Airport – Although most people would not visit an airport as part of their vacation plans, Truckee Tahoe Airport offers glider rides that take visitors to the air in order to full view the wonders of the surrounding landscape.

• Truckee Jail Museum – The Truckee Jail was built in 1875 and was used continuously until 1964. One of the few 19th century jailhouses still standing, Truckee decided to build this one because they were sending, on average, one prisoner per day to the nearest “calaboose.”

Among the more notorious visitors to the Truckee jail were Baby Face" Nelson and "Ma" Spinelli and her gang. According to legend, "Machine Gun" Kelly even spent a night there for shoplifting.

• Donner Pines Center – Donner Pines Center is nearly a must on the list of places to visit at Donner Lake. There are no restaurants along the shoreline of Donner Lake, but the Donner Kitchen, in Donner Pines Center, serves breakfast and lunch.

In addition, Donner Pines Center houses Donner Market, the best place to purchase groceries and one location for purchasing souvenirs.

• Donner Summit – Overlooking Donner Lake is Donner Summit, the perfect place for hiking, rock climbing, exploring 4,000-year-old petroglyphs, or simply enjoying the view of both Donner Lake and Rainbow Bridge. The curvy stretch of Highway 40 between Donner Lake and Donner Summit is also the original path of Donner Pass. Hiking in the area ranges in difficulty from fairly easy to extremely strenouous.

• Loch Leven Lodge – Central to fishing, hiking, skiing, and visiting the historical sites is Loch Leven Lodge. All townhouses, suites, studios and bedrooms at Loch Leven are lakefront, with views of Donner and Castle Peaks, and have access to a 5,000-square-foot redwood deck and boat dock.

There are many places to see at Donner Lake, ranging from the odd to the beautiful. With its incredible scenery and the ability to capitalize on the history of the area, Donner Lake offers visitors the ability to explore the past, lose their stress, or simply breathe in the surrounding beauty.
